"Ehresman set for life-changing experience" "WT sophomore to be exchange student to England"
PAYNE- With school just beginning last wee, most sophomores are lookin gorward to getting their driver's license, the upcoming homecoming dancem seeing their friends again on a regular bases or something similar.
Howeverm for one sophomore-to-be at Wayne Trace, those things have been put hold for a bigger dream.
From the time she was seven, Kayla Ehresman wanted to e an exchange student. That dream will begin its journey on Monday as Ehresman flies to London as part of the AYUSA Global Youth Exhcange Student Program.
"I've watned to do this since I was seven and an exchange student came to my grandparent's church," noted Kayla. "I just thought it was really neat then and now it is an opportunity that I just really watned to tak advantage of."
One of the negatives to this, though, is the thought of going away from parents Tony and Andrea.
"I will definitely miss my parents," added Kayla. "They have always been there for me and I will miss them alot. I will miss the rest of my family as well as my friends."
With all of the security concerns across the world as well as jus allowing your teenage daughter to be gone for almost a year, many poepole probably would have a hard time doing it. However, both Tony and Andrea noted one thing as the driving force in giving their daughter this opportunity.
"She has always had this dream of doing this," stated Tony. "Kayla has wated to do this for many years and it would have been very hard for us to not allow her to do this."
"It is a concern having your daughter halfway across the world from you," added Andrea. "But Kayla is very focused on her goals and this was one of them. Probably if it wasn't something she's wanted to do for so long, maybe we wouldn't have let her do it. But we couldn't take this chance awya from her."
The Ehresman's began this process late in the fall on 2004 before finally beginning to fill out hte proper paperwork in the spring of 2005. They then recived the final word that Kayla had been approved late this spring.
"That was an exciting but sad day," noted Andrea. "While we were very excited for Kayla, it was also confirmed that we were losing her for a year."
Kayla wil lbe attending a school near Brixham, England beginning on September 7th. The school year in England runs in quarters instead of semesters, so Kayla won't wrap up her school year until July 21st.
"It is very costly to do this," added Tony. "But the costs that are involved are well worth it to give her this opportunity. It will only help her grow up and be a better person down the road. It gives her a chance to experience things in life that most people will never get to do."
"One of the things I'm looking forward to is to experience the differences in the cultue," added Kayla. "Just seeing how they do things compared to here and to see the way they live. I am very excited about going and just gettin the different takes on things in England."
"I chose England because it would be similar to usbut yet there will be differences as well," stated Kayla. "They are also rich in theatrical history and I'm very intrested in that because I enjoy the theatre and arts."
"She is very determinded about htings and has her plands mad out for the future," concluded Andrea. "She puts her mind to things and gets them done"
